Salt is sodium chloride or NaCl. Sodium(Na) is a major ion with positive charge(Cation) in the extracellular body fluids including blood. Increasing Na causes the osmotic pull of water and increases the extracellular fluid volume and blood volume. Increasing blood volume thus increases the Blood Pressure. As a matter of fact the first modality of managing hypertension is lifestyle modification including low salt diet, exercise and refraining from smoking.
