It is a truly effective marketing strategy.
However you have to make sure that the celebrity's profile matches the associated requirements for promoting your product.

Yes it is.
It can work against you as well.
This approach work as a wide appeal or band wagon approach.
What the company is saying to the customer, "your favorite actor, actress, athlete, etc...
is wearing or using this service so jump on the band wagon.
It does work particularly well for specific segments of the marketing group.
You must realize it does not work well for all market segments.
When you choose an individual to represent your brand they essentially become the brand themselves.
Many companies are careful to distance themselves from certain individuals as what they are trying to promote is not consistent with the values that the celebrity endorser is representing.
That is why you see a lot of companies pull their endorsements when a celebrity does something distasteful that mars the brand.
This can be really tricky and really costly if you have to pull your endorsement or do damage control.
It does work.

Yes, of course; Chances are, your opinions aren't as likely to be swayed by average, normal individuals who you know next to nothing about, than by well-know and popular celebrities you've developed opinions and views on.
If your views on a celebrity are positive ones, that in turn makes the brand or product advertised that much more enticing.

YES, It is very effective way of marketing; espcially products for children (sports wear) and women, marketing for daily use products.

The ONLY issue with celebrity endorsement is that this inflate the price of Product due to high cost of marketing. Such as Big brands like Nike, Adidas, Pepsi, etc

If the sales figures are high in comparison to the competitors of the same products, after a celebrity promoted it, then we can say it is effective.

It has two sides.
Firstly if people really follow the celebrity then it would be effective.
Otherwise it is just like another new product and people won't be bothered to take a notice.
Ultimately, its all about personal taste.

Well, Tendulkar & Bachan & SRK, etc can definitely boom-sell a product.
No doubt, CELEBRITIES are the strong marketing and selling factors.
Celebrities are the FASTEST selling among all types of AD MEDIA..
Spending crores of rupees is a waste, if you don't involve a celebrity in it.
Celebrities are definitely a BOON to any Branding-Marketing-Sales Manager, any day!!!

Celebrity Endorsement is no doubt an effective way of Promotion which works specially in Fashion and High Profile Products.  People take celebrities as role model and try to use that product or service. But it is not true in every case.  In certain cases it has a very little or zero effect and in some cases it effects negatively. Specially Low Price low volume items.

Lets have it just this way. I am an audience and I know who are the people am watching. If I build a trust to that celebrity for sure I will be encourage to use what she is using. There is Faith on the endorsement and trust that is build immediately. BUT this is not a low cost type of advertising or marketing and you need to pamper this type of advertisement or marketing. Dont lety it die, coz when it dies, your business will die also. Have your marketing strategy be in different baskets. Plan A, B ,C or even Z.
