How safe is online hotel booking?

would say almost100%. Almost all the OTAs (Online Travel Agent) that get listed when you search for a hotel (Like Expedia, Tripadvisor, Agoda) online, have a huge user base and have a proven track record. Even if you don't get what you were promised (highly unlikely), you can raise the issue with them and get it sorted easily. Bottomline: If the look & feel of the booking website is fishy, do a thorough online search for its credibility.  Or you can just go for the most popular websites to book your stay.

It depends on the site or company you are dealing with, but it is often safe

It depends on the website but in general it is safe to book online and most online travel agency bookings provide all the information so there is little room for doubt. An average booker would know if it is safe or not. There is little room for fraud booking online and it is at most time a convenient way to manange your travel plans.

90% safe. This depends a lot on which online integration system you have used. Some hotels offer online bookings but when you arrive the rooms could in fact be full.
