The great leader is seen as servant first, and that simple fact is the key to greatness. But their life and faith will be shaped by their dedication to shepherding. Shephred Leader is the one who is visible, examinable, measurable and lead from the front and hence falls under Sicence of Leadership and the power of this is evident in it's presence.
Once the followers are mentored / nurtured, then the followers are ready to receive delegation. Then like a mother the leadership should lead from the behind. This is described as "behind the scences" leader and falls under Art of Leadership is not visible and therefore not examinable, measurable. But, Inspirable and all leaders follwers respects. The power of this is evident in it's absence
Leading from front or behind is very circunstantial, and depends on what is meant by leadership. In modern politics and in very advanced democratic regimes, leaders tend to lead from behind. However if we talk about profit seeking organizations and enterprises, then leadership very circumstantial, if we need to make significant changes or turaround then leaders have to lead from the front. Again the type of leadership depends on the corporation life cycle. However a true leader is the one who can adapt in all circumstances.
A good leader always leads from the front and leads by example.
There are2 aspects to the captioned question:
There is a very fine line here which needs to be tread with utmost caution as you cannot make the pie & eat it at the same time too.But if a leader really wants his team to grow & take up leadership roles in future then having a proper mix of both approaches is absolutely necessary.
It is depend on the situation of the team and the gool
1-if your team capability is not suffeicent you should lead frontly
2-if the goal have a long way it is difficult to lead frontal
3-if the gool way is not clear and have a lot of risk you have to lead frontal
....... Etc
A good leader leads from the front. Inspite of opposition, he intiates changes within the team. Leading by example, he demonstrates innovation and application. Not willing to punish his detractors, he accomodates them even to the extent that he eliminates himself from the equation.
Eventually, the team realizes that he is different from the lot and backs him by throwing their full weight behind him. This is the point, when the team progresses through unity and final perseverance. The acid test for the charismatic leader is non existent as he passes through it, in flying colours. He is known by now, all across as a proven leader- a leader who transforms and brings unimaginable and unforeseen results!
