A decision arises after consideration of the available resources such as knowledge, information, data, environment, influence, etc.
When a team member makes a decision, it may be the best they could arrive at. If it is a poor decision for the management, then a good manager should first assess and evaluate the team members resources, add his own valuable input, share his experience and expertise and allow the team member to reconsider their decision now with the added resources, helping them to arrive at the managements desirable decision.
This should be followed by encouragment and reward.
Through this process, a good manager helps the team members to learn and apply best decision making techniques.
Before implementation, the reasons for poor decisions will be ckecked and verified.
In situation if you find decision poor your consent with it's weak points will induce them to avoid such poor decisions..
If they are only decisions then reasoning with them until they are convinced with your idea would be a good way. Sometimes throwing the responsiblity of the results on their shoulders would be a good way of convincing but you have to be prepared with a plan B
First take ownership of that poor decision. Corrective actrion should be performed, There should be proper QA process in place from the begining of any activity. then choosing right candidates defining proper RACI matrix, then comes development of team with proper training, coaching & feedback.
Come together and discuss the decisions and also consult widely
After checking the brief details of the decision, i will try to re-do it in less consuming time in an ideal way that bring great and overall satisfaction to everyone.
Sit with them, have a one-on-one conversation. Listen to their reasoning and explanation. breakdown their thoughts. Offer different perspectives and explain why it may be a bad decision and why. Understanding the logic and reasoning behind any decision with surely ensure they never repeat the same mistake again.
