Marketing means generating prospects while sales means converting the prospects into orders or purchases.

Marketing is based around creating a pull for customers by positioning the product, service or brand in the minds of consumers in such a way that it becomes desirable and the demand for the product is created or alternatively creating a product, service or brand which is demanded by the segmented cluster group according to market research.
Whereas Sales is a support function of Marketing where the product, service or brand is made visible and available to consumers to purchase.
Sales is only a process where a transaction is completed. Rest all is Marketing. If Marketing does not do the job right, Sales can never happen.

Marketing is nothing but we are utilizing our sources like product listing on website, brochures, eye catching advertisement and grabbing the leads which is not on the non-final stages.
But sales is nothing but the numbers play, we need to sell our products which is lying in our warehouse and also which is upcoming from the suppliers in week or two. We need to close the deals which is already in the final stages.
