to generate power, as an open cycle GT the starting times are very quick and therefore can be used as back up power in the grid for peaking or as a back up for renewable energy like wind and PV. In combined cycle applications the gas tubines are the most efficient way to generate power. currently this can exceed 60% already with the latest technologies

Gas turbines are rotary machines. The air is compressed to very high pressures and the temperature is increased by combustion. This in turn used to rotate the turbine. Part of this energy is used in rotating the compressor. THe rest can be used for different applications - mechanical drive (power generation, rotary machines in oil&gas industries, rotor in aircrafts) and also propulsion of aircraft.
