To be In the top management should mean a lot of things and among them:

*Knowing the "big picture' of the co. targets.

*Having a better access to the information available.

*having a better experience.

And if only for those /3/ reason, the top management is a must for guiding the teams to reach the best results for the establishment.

self motivated teams can be successful but again they need their management support.

In case of stakeholder management top management is a stakeholder with high power and influence and should be managed closely,  in the other hand investment and other kind of support usually should be done by top managements and are very crucial for success.

If there is no faith and belief in top management, you will not have the leadership to carry out a project. On the end-user side, you will equally need a degree of leadership to keep some order and discipline in a project.

A self motivated end user team can really bring success to a project as they can initiate new ideas when there is a hitch and can proffer solution quickly.

Since they are self motivated, they are willing and will put all necessary resource to ensure things work out fine. They will make sure things go on fine and are highly resolute to achieve the expected results.

Self motivation as been seen as a factor that support individuals to achieve their desired goal and when in a work place it enhance cohesion among team members that can catalyze rapid growth and maximum support among them.

Without management approval and consent, how can you be successful as you need finance, authority and control of your project.

A very good question and perspective.

Let me note down the key areas of concerns that management has over a project:

1. Any project is funded with capital. This capital is approved within the company from an accountable person who will be in the management. Once the capital is approved, the management is setup to oversee the progress of that project towards the set objectives.

2. As part of the oversight, the management would also be vigilant to see if any additional opportunities are present while the project is being executed.

3. The management would map the vision, culture, risk management of the company on the project while the project team is busy on the planned activities.

Coming back to the question. I would divide it into two parts:

"Why support of Top Management is important for making any project successful ?"

This is a classic top down approach model. In this model, a hierarchy is set and the business owners would appoint the staff to monitor the progress. The bigger the company, the more business operations would be in place and that requires lot of monitoring.

"Can a self motivated End user team make any project successful ?"

Yes, it is possible. In different regions this gets called as "startup". This completely dissolves the middle management and a small team takes complete ownership and not just end-user activities. This could involve budgets, customer issues, decision making, development, support, purchases, quality, dispute handling and a lot more.

The important point is to ensure that all accountabilities would be placed on the same team which has to perform the tasks. This is not recommended on a long run since taking care of all these by the same team may lead to health risks or it may actually demotivate the team too.
