In my opinion literature is both male and female dominated gift and skill. it doesn't matter whether you are male or female for as long as it is inate and in your passion and gift it will manifest and revealed.

Definitely male-dominated. Some female writers in the18th/19th century England were even forced to use male pseudonym for recognition in the male-dominated field!

Well, we can't just answer this question out of a mere speculation. There is something called Patriarchy and Male-gaze which prevented women from expressing their potentials. In countries whch were colonised, women were doubly-oppressed by colonialism and patriarchy. However, nowadays, women are allowed to express, write and speak their minds but still, Literature is still male-dominated in  a way or another

Both, since there were and are great writers of both sexes there

It is a male dominating subject because men like to use language as a tool to impress and convince , meanwhile for ladies, it is a means of communication
