Design spiral:
1- Owners Requirements.
2- Concept Design.
3- Preliminary design.
4- Contract design.
5- Detailed design.
The design spiral is a methodology for developing ship designs. As ships are complex systems with highly interdependent variables, it quickly becomes impossible to calculate factors simultaneously. Instead, the design spiral describes a process of iterative refinement to 'zero in' on an efficient design. Each successive iteration is referred to as a 'spin' of the spiral. Phases or cycles are considered once a given level of technical refinement has been achieved. It is important to note that is not a concrete, defined checklist: particularly in the early stages, the order of evaluation may be rather hap-hazard.
Every cycle has the same evaluations: Hull form, structural arrange, ... You must respect an order, for instance you can design electrical plant before stability. Common sense.
Designing a ship requires certain knowledge:
1- purpose of the ship (RoRo, Dreging, Container ....etc)
2- General arrangements (What dose it holds as in number of cabins, balancing requirements, working loads, engine requirements, design specifications ... Etc)
3- then you interpret the requirements into the new design taking into consideration the technologies and equipments available in the market and how it fits in.
4- take into matter legal requirements like class and registration requirement (different country different requirement).
First Step for the Ship design is that Literature survey and principle dimension analysis. And then plotting the lines plan using offset data.

the main dimensions is the most important factor, you must take in consideration all the requirement of the owner, from the shape of the hull until the arrangement of other stuff ,and for the design it's depend about your skills and your vision, first of all you must sketch all the edges of one side of the hull, then you can create the surface easily
on realise l'offre projet
ensuite on fait l'avant projet du navire
et le projet technique
et enfin le projet d'exécution
It is calculation of ship's main particulars based on what owner desires and standards suggested and other parameters .
a table of Offsets has to be derived from data available from ships in service and ship's hull type will be determined .
ship's hull would have a resistance when it moves in sea at speed desired , so the power needed would be calculated and the propulsion system would be selected .
I hope my answer is useful.
