1 - by adding Virtual memory
2 - by adding ReadyBoost
3 - by adding swap at Linux OS
If you know more please tell
Wich OS are you using???
1) Virtual memory is just a file using a portion of your hard drive (it's not real memory) but MANY programs need the sum of RAM and virtual memory to be enough to work.
2) ReadyBoost is a disk caching software component developed by Microsoft (it's present in Vista and above). Because usually SD cards are faster that hard disk drives, the OS caches information in them. Beware that USB2.0 is often slower than many modern hard disk drives, so I would recommend using an USB3.0 port and a good performer SD card.
3) (Again, what OS are you using?) Every Linux OS needs a swap PARTITION , even if it does not use it.
number2 ( by ReadyBoots) and you can use extra flashmemory or hardisk just use ReadyBoost

by adding virtual memory if guest is running on any hypervisor, Xen , VMware etc and you need to make sure to edit the config file of Xen-Guest as well so when Hypervisor got reboot, the added memory would appear, otherwise not
In emergency cases, you can add Swap as well but its just a piece of memory from Hardisk and 100 times slower than memory :)
We can increase system memory without adding physical RAM.
windows- Virtaul Memory
