Foot numbness or numbness of the toes are referred to as a form of peripheral neuropathy. This can be brought on by multiple causal factors but among the most common is a direct result of high blood glucose (I.e. Diabetes). Excess sugars within the circulation system can cause direct damage to blood vessels hindering proper blood flow to the tissues and most importantly nerve cells. An additional cause is through the sorbitol pathway structure, whereby excess sugar can be directly related to swelling of nerve cells and consequent damage causing loss in that nerve cell function. Among the nerve cells damage can be noted in motor, sensory and autonomic nerves. What one can do to minimize this numbness sesantion or feeling is comtrol your blood sugar through either diet control, pharmacological intervention or both. As a podiatrist we can help manage some of the symptoms by the use of certain modalities that have been proven to help increase circulation to the feet/toes including the use of compression hosiery (dependent on no PAD status of patient of course). There are so much possible treatment options available You can contact me directly if you neeed any further explanation on foot numbnes.
