Tie a carrot to a piece of string: tie the string to a stick, and tie the stick behind the head of the donkey so that he can see the carrot. He will walk towards the carrot, but will never reach it. If he doesn't walk forward, or walks too slowly, whack him on the rump with a stick, hard enough so he'll notice but not hard to enough to do any harm.
I don't actually know if this works on donkeys but, with suitable replacements for the carrot and the stick, it works well on people. On the whole, the carrot is the more effective of the two. If the stick is really big and scary, and the donkey is really sure that you will use it, you usually don't have to.
