Coltan is the popular name given to a columbite–tantalite  mix .It is a dull black metallic ore from which the elements niobium and tantalum are extracted. The niobium-dominant mineral in coltan is columbite and the tantalum-dominant mineral is tantalite.

These are associated with the terminal end of "Bowen's Reaction Series" and are mostly associated wtih hydrothermal solution containing rare metals. Also they are found in the vicinity of mafic dyke intrusions within granites.

Having properties like good electrical and thermal conductivity and radioactivity, the most suitable mix of exploration methods are - electrical and radioactive.
