If the students have passed through the primary levels of grammar lessons such as grammatical structure and pronunciation the next stage is practise, and it is the most important one.
Students should be given the opportunity to practice language as it is spoken outside of the classroom, that is, exercising a short conversation while working in pairs or making a "role play" such as between the receptionist and costumer for example.
Also they can just talk about their experiences or trips or anything important in their lives through the monologue forms and/or an essays.

It depends on the students, but for me as an English Literature Student i would love if the teacher provided me with examples.
I teached arabic to non speakers for a while, and what i did is i asked the students to qalify different methods i used and chose what they thought is the most productive to them.
