Will modern technology replace accountants?

It's understandable since most people don't know much about what accountants do. There is too much human judgment required in accounting for computers to replace accountants any time soon. It's sort of like asking whether computers will replace lawyers or physicians. Computers can certainly make accounting more efficient by automating purely mechanical tasks such as data entry or basic calculations. But computers cannot, for example, research accounting standards and tax laws and apply them to complex situations comprised of many interrelated facts and circumstances. Maybe someday when artificial intelligence approaches human intelligence, computers will be able to, say, determine whether a contingent liability must be recognized under U.S. GAAP. But at that point, computers will replace pretty much all professions.
