Techniques to follow in requirements elicitation are based on what is defined in the BA plan, one of the main sections in BA plan is the techniques to use in a specific initiative or project. Project type forces what techniques to be used, stakeholder groups and their geographical distribution forces what techniques to be used and how to apply these techniques in eliciting requirements.
Also, depending on the time allocated for the requirements elicitation, some techniques require a lot of time to be completed like interviews, while requirements workshop requires less time to discover a lot of requirements.
requirement elicitation requires a combination of best practices to properly elicit what is required from stakeholders. its requirements prototyping. observation, the five whys, just to mention a few which are scoped out into four major elicitation phases ..prepare for elicitation, perform elicitation, document elicitation and document elicitation.... its an iterative process requiring a combination of tactics for quality to be ascertained. its a complex use of different techniques to avoid a missed requirement.
