The maximum carrying capacity of a ship, expressed in tons, of cargo, stores, provisions and bunker fuel. Deadweight is used interchangeably with deadweight tonnage and deadweight carrying capacity. A vessel´s capacity for cargo is less than its total deadweight tonnage.
