'The Wizard of Oz'. It's simple, easy, clear language makes it a great choice for a child, not to mention it's catchy and interesting plot.

To me a good choice is Lewis Carroll's 'Alice's Adventures in the Wonderland.' Yet another choice is Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
