The marketing plans are basically made for selling only. The telling (means Advertisement / word of mouth publicity etc) is a supportive function of the marketing plan. So both the things are necessary in the marketing plan.

There are marketing plans, which can only have selling not telling but in such cases the product movement is normally slow.

By adding values to every word you say , asking the customers smart questions about thier needs or make them speak their minds out , so you can find out which word  would make a difference and become an added value that could meet with the customer's needs .

I believe every single Marketing Plan should - at the end of the day - to sell , but I believe we are talking about the Branding campaigns.....
but with all my respect even the Branding campaigns is selling but with indirect approach
