The trick is to build a relationship with that person.  It is usually very difficult for a boss to publicly criticize another, especially someone who has praised their work in the past, without appearing to subtract from your own accolades.  The problem can not be corrected overnight.  Here is a five tier strategy for you:

1.  Try to find the boss's area of competence and expertise and complement them on it in public.  Be sincere, do not be glib or superficial.  The boss will then find it hard to criticize you in public, without harming their own reputation in turn.

2.  Listen when criticized, then  repeat back what you heard, saying I hear you saying : "..............", then emphasize your commitment to the firm, the project and to goals.  If the criticism is valid improve the work.  Be honest here:  leave your ego out of the equation.

3.  Develop a thick skin.  Do not take this personally.  It is not who you are, and it does not define you as a person - your family, connections and achievements do.  If the quality of your work is above that of others, then the work will speak for itself.  If not, improve the work.

4.  Continue to network within the firm, and promote your services.  Make yourself indispensable by offering services and competencies no one else can.  Approach department heads with those offers, with supervisor approval of course.

5.  Network outside, but do not necessarily try to relocate as advised above.  Instead, move up.  Nothing worth having comes easy !  When offered a better position, or more money, then consider that.

Best of Luck, and God Speed.

Doing better than others doesnt mean that its perfect, possibly the ability is much more than what has been done hence criticised therefore re-check to improve the lacking area.

Constructive criticism is always welcome because everyone else in the team will benefit. If criticism is done to spite an individual then dignifying it with an answer is basically a waste of time. Everyone is an adult in the workplace and likewise individuals should respect each other for the common good of the organisation.
