Group discussions with peers also helps because we learn from listening and watching others. Immerse yourself in the language as much as possible. Seek out native speakers and explain that you want to improve your English. Watch English speaking television and movies. Soap operas are the best since people speak slowly and dramatically to give you clues about meaning ;). Write down idioms that don't make sense to you and look for someone who can help you with these or search the internet. American English in particular is full of these.
