Kill the difference between your team and yourself. Dont impose personal ideas on the team. Dont insist on your accuracy and final words. invite suggestions from the team.
I don't care either you are elected or selected , you are the leader , team members must listen to you , if problem with one or two it would be easy to handle , otherwise give a solid excuse that I cannot be team leader this time , may be next time or you look for opportunity some where else eventually. Choice is yours which is more appropriate .
Team leader is the captain of the ship and must be well aware of all the activities (human behavior) taking place within the team. Normally team achieve targets when each member play their positive roles as per the set criteria spelled out for each member. Here the competency and Know your Men principle play a vital role to mold every individual into a group and then as a team. Team Leader should be fair, honest, competent and must act as a leader and not a Commander.
Any resentment by members against their leader should be taken seriously and a patience hearing on one to one basis and then with the entire team will provide a fair idea about their concerns for the leader. If their grievances are based on cogent reasons then team leader should present himself for accountability and should all out efforts to improve his grey areas.
In case Team Leader fails to gain the confidence of the team then he should respectfully call it a day and let other take the charge of the ship so that goal/target of team is not affected which gets more priority than a issue of leadership. The relinquished leader should work as a normal member and deliver best of its best. This short change in role may help at some later stage to turn the tide in his favour and the entire team realizes their error of judgment.
I think the most reasonable positive ways to handle such issue is to give the feeling that each member of the team is a real leader by following golden points :1- Don't ignore their contributions even it's irrelevant.2- Reduce the gaps between you and them.3- Speak simple business language.4- Give them a chance to brake the ice block ( Let them speak, discuss, argue........even let them speak for a moments about any think they love to speak about it ( their kids, hobbies, favorite food ,,,,,,,but within short time ).5- Guide them to create workshops and let them give their maximum.6- Always be proud about what they did during the activities.7- Always get their attention by brainstorming
8-Encourging them by some awards and gifts or even promoting.
9- Show some toughness and kindness during the time of work.
10- Always update them with some new information, presentations .....etc.
This is largely due to the miscommunication or communication gap and misconception. try to find out where these things lie. either on your side or on team side.
Listen to feed back from team. Make corrections in behaviour where required. Be consistent with your affirmative actions.Win back the confidence of the team through positive behaviour. Once each member of the team understands that you are genuinely concerned about their development and are able to link their goals with the achievement of teams goal they will start looking up to you as a leader.
Being patient and good listener are the qualities of a good sales person. Try to minimize the differences between you and your team. Appreciate the good ideas and good work. You should not impose your decisions on your team instead create an atmosphere of sharing the responsibility. Holding regular meetings and discuss the issues in the meeting and take the decision with consensus rather than imposing orders. Provide an opportunity to every one to speak out over every issue so that you can know what is there inside of their heart. Make them feel that they are being looked after well by you. You have to take the grip over your team slowly and steadily.
If you are a leader with ability of leadership, don't emphasis your team to follow your instructions. They will unintentionally follow your instructions due to your abilities. If they don't, its mean that you are not deserving person to be a leader.
The team lead of a project in my company got promoted to Project Manager and one of the oldest developers who worked for2 years on the project expected to become team lead. I worked in a different team at the time as a developer (and had got bored of the project) and had coincidentally asked my department head if there was any other project I could work on.
Try to know reason then fix it you can try to be close to him to know that you deal with all team as with him
