What are the basic steps to begin with SSRS?

Totally agree with Hatem. TSQL querying / performance tuning, views etc are definitely the most important thing to know before we can start with SSRS

First at all, you need to be very good in TSQL (Transaction Structure Query Language), then you need to be familiar with using BIDS (Business Intelligence Development Studio) which can be found on both Visual Studio and with SQL Server.
From there you will be able to create new Reporting project and start to create your own report.

SQL Queries, Stored Procedure, BIDS Knowledge, SSRS Server knowledge, SSRS configuration, different database connectores knowledge. These are some basics required for SSRS reporting.
