This is an interesting question. Safety becomes more complete when considered in a holistic manner.

Driver distractions are a major contributor to road accidents, and techniques to increase driver focus is a step in the right direction. Notwithstanding, focus should also be into making vehicles safer in themselves. Increased autonomy in vehicle transportation, and connected vehicles and vehicle infrastructure are steps forward in reducing human errors leading to accidents. The future vehicles would certainly be safer with the driver stress factor and skill needs significantly reduced.

The ultimate goal should be redact driving as a skill altogether, and rather consider personal transportation as natural as walking on a road.
