Sorry, I do not agree with Mr Tabrez Ahmed.
While reporting is important in any department, from your answer I feel reporting is more important than selling, or prospecting.
Sales team job is selling, so much control is frustrating an demotivating and make you feel over controlled in such a way as if the company doesn't trust you. I tend to demand minimum reporting and collect the data my self by GOING OUT WITH THE SALES TEAM, I like to visit customers with sales team, so I can see their daily work, the challenges they find, the difficulties they face, and how can the company help them selling or the product be improved. Also in some cases, I support and help them in difficult projects or important accounts.
I trust my team and I know they work hard and I train them to do it right, otherwise, I fire that member of the staff.
Sales manager must SELL, be in contact with customers, go outside and see what's going on.
A successful sales team leader is available in the office earlier than his team members and ready to have a cup of morning coffee while discussing the upcoming tasks. Going through each members efforts of the last day, if found to assist in cracking some sales is eager to go out with them to get it done.

individual/team performance is measured to adjust priorities and objectives for the following day in order to exceed sales goals.
Prospecting new clients, caring about the clients and they satisfaction,
A good Manager, is also a good follower, Do it the task first alone to show him what is right and accurate, and then, do it together and leave him alone in his task so that you can see if he follow your instruction
