There are basically two major categories of maintenance tasks carried out on an aircraft:,

scheduled or unscheduled.

However this can be basically classified into5 main types of maintenance 

1. Preventive maintenance - Inspection tasks are carried out even if no problems have arisen. The purpose is to ensure the aircraft/component/system stays in a serviceable condition.

2. Predictive maintenance - These are performed when physical variables such as temperatures (EGT), N1 vibrations etc are analysed and historical data from the variation of the same is used to indicate onset of problems.

3. Corrective maintenance - Used to rectify snags. They are unscheduled.

4. Periodic maintenance - These are time specified and includes the A, C, D checks. 

5. Zero hours (overhaul) - Life limited parts are replaced, complete overhaul is performed so that the aircraft and parts assumes zero life usage. (This was in the past and no longer applies to today's aircraft)

Schedulle and Unschedulle Maintenance

First place by type of aircraft maintenance and each aircraft has its own book where the reconstruction of their parts and the timing of inspections, maintenance and replacement must .uaamh daily inspection for each aircraft before any trip

Basically, there are two categories of maintenence on an aircraft such as Scheduled and Unscheduled maintenance. Schedule maintenance further classified into group of maintenence task based on the time and requirements such as "A Check", "C Check", "D Check", "Transit Check / Stay over Check" etc. Unschedule maintenance further classified as Components replacement due to failure, Troubleshooting system due to malfunction, Abnormal finding and rectification during schedule maintenance etc.

3.depot

They are divided into three types of “checks” that bundle together hundreds of tasks – A Checks, C Checks and D Checks. (The B Check got absorbed into the others for more modern aircraft.)
