If one engine stops in flight, necessary measures are taken by the pilot eg cutting fuel supply to that engine. The pilot then has to fly to the nearest airport to land the plane. If the engine stops while still on ground then the pilot has to abort that flight if it is still safe to do so.
Most commercial aircrafts are perfectly capable of continuing the journey with the remaining engines. In case of twin engine aircrafts, ETOPS certification requirement is upto3 hrs operation on a single engine.
However in case of engine failure, all airlines have protocol in place to redirect to the nearest airport to avoid the possibility of the second engine failure ( since almost all aircraft systems are powered by the engines,contrary to the popular perception of aircraft just falling out of the sky in such a case) and procedural restarting of the stopped engine if it was just a flameout.
Even in the case of both engines being inoperative, the aircraft can safely glide to the nearest airfield with the help of rudimentary controls and systems powered by the Ram Air Turbine.
