Quality product can go unnoticed by potential buyers if the customer service is poor. But any product with excellent customer service will attract buyers. Customer service leaves a lasting impact to consumers more than the product. Take for an example when eating out in a restaurant, customers are more willing to give a tip for an excellent customer service than having a good tasting meal but with poor customer service.
However though, the product should always be of quality.
A quality product coupled with excellent customer service is vital for success of a company's growth. It not just creates goodwill and value for the organisation but also helps in creating and imprinting a positive image in the minds of present and prospective customers.
In addition to the answers I would say that "product quality" is like your message, and "customer service" is like your communication method, if you mis-handle one of them , you won't get the desired results !
from my own point of view we have to compromise but we have to concentrate more on customer service levels as a sales based organization profits are gained from customer so if we concentrated on obtaining high levels of cs we will gain high reputation which will lead us to high profits
The quality of the product and the extent of customer service provided are two different aspects that drive the organization.
I always take an example of a twin engine Aircraft, if both are efficient the ride is smooth, if one or the other is not up to the mark the other factor can be used to manage the loss or instability.
a quality product is the one important, because if your product have a quality you recieve a zero complain, customer satisfaction, customer growth, sales growth, trusted customers and also a company growth.
depending on product and needs of the customer, if you are dealing in machines serviceable by you, quality is priority, it is useless having many customers satisfied and bringing back the product for replacement and servicing creating extra costs.
some products where performance is not an issue eg. clothing, leisure, etc, customers want smiles and friendly care, they buy people rather than products.
The choice lies with the trend running in present era. Like in18th century with new inventions, in19th century with quality products, in20th century due to globalization, services were prime. Now in21st century , having ample competitors/options across the world , services & quality in equal is must to survive.
However, if there is a situation to opt between..., than "Quality" of a product should be addresses more as it is a proven fact that market has been taken up always by good quality than comprised quality products irrespective of services and sometime even cost.
