There is no easy answer for this question.

Generally I am using Linux kernel based OS and it' s true that Linux based OS are secure and open source:you can access and read the source files than compile your kernel and all the software that is needed.

But it' s also real that not many technicians can really understand something like the Linux kernel source files.

Most of the security work is based on the System' s observation.

I am speaking about System (hardware plus software) because any hardware or software that the administrator is in need to install can represent a security risk.

In my personal opinion the difference is not the OS is the Administrator: any OS, server, software or hardware must be setup properly to be secure.

Most of the standard setup are made for installation purpose only and must be revised.

This is the professional but sometimes obscure work of the Administrator / IT manager.

You need experience, patience and a "policy". There are some risks that can not be tolerate, some to take under control, some are acceptable and inevitable.

Refuse the false security that some hardware or software give you and stay up to date, any serious company or organization have security bulletin like:

From my point of view, both are highly vulnerable, it depends who is penetrating them.

All it matters who is exploiting them.

For example:-

On a web hosting Platform, weather the server is on Linux or windows.

An attacker will not directly attack the Linux or windows tools, he will attack the web applications weather its wordpress, opencart or any script which is buggy, he will first try to enter from there, so if those scripts are buggy than its not the Linux or windows fall.

In my experience both are just OS, No server can be bulletproof to percent security but if you have the skills, you can at least make it to. percent secure.
