For Class C address the host portion is2^8 or256. Out of this1 address is used for network address and the other for broadcast address.So , (2^8) -2 =256-2

which is254 devices

256 ip address .254 (Usabale) ip address can be assigned to hosts   .. because the first ip addres will be assigned to the gateway and the last ip address will be assigned to broadcasting in the subnet area . :)

ie=2^8=256

therefore valid hosts=2^h-2

=2^8-2

=256-2

=254
