We learn in networking that straight through cables are for connecting different devices (eg: PC to switch), cross over cables for same devices(switch to switch) and roll over for router configuration.
With the newer technology we don't need to worry about the type of cables anymore. Auto MDI-X (Medium Independent Interface Crossover) ports on newer network interfaces detect if the connection would require a crossover and automatically chooses the MDI or MDI-X configuration to properly match the other end of the link.
Its still in practise but now a days in Cisco switches luckily we have Midi and Midix option which detects the they type and convert as per the requirment
Just Because of new technology comes which is MDIX ( Medium Dependent Interface Crossover)
