Well, ASME is actually a construction codes that cover design, fabrication and new construction issues but after they are put in service API codes governs the continued operation, inspection and repairs. For example, ASME Section VIII covers fabrication of pressure vessels but once the pressure vessel are put in service, API 510 takes place. Process piping in refineries, terminals or petrochemical plants are designed and built per ASME B 31.3. After they are placed in service, API 570 governs inspection and repairs.
ASME VIII, V and IX is actually a construction codes that cover new construction issues, rather than the ultimate in fitness for service (FFS) criteria or technical perfection. They are written entirely from a new construction viewpoint up to the hand over or putting the equipment into used. These codes are strictly not written with the activity of in-service inspection, repair or alteration in mind. They are definitive about the technical requirements or acceptance criteria that they set.
ASME: American society of mechanical engineering is Code of constuction for different Equipmet/Parts e.g ASME Section I to XII for Nuclear, Boiler, NDT, and FRP vessel, MAterial Properties etc. Where as ASME B 16.5 for flanges and other differnt codes for different parts.
API: American petroleum institute is the standard guidance and fabrication method for Storgae tanks.
API code - Established by "American Petroleum Institute"
ASME Code: Established by American Society for Mechanical Engineers.
American society of mechanical engineering is used for acceptance and rejection criteria to check the quality.
API code - Established by American Petroleum Institute - For "Design and development "
API is American Petroleum Institute which provides more on testing like API Publ. Fireproofing Practices in Petroleum and Petrochemical Processing Plant while ASME is American Society for Mechanical Engineers which provide guidelines on design, fabrication and construction for new facilities.
API is American Petroleum Institute which mainly provides guidelines for offshore structure used by oil and gas firms . ASME is American society for Mechanical Engineers which is provides more generic guidelines in the field of Mechanical engineering design.
ASME ( American society of Mechanical Engineer) Codes are used for Materials, Design, construction, Fabrication, NDT, DT etc of process equipment, Piping and Pipeline.
API (American Petroleum Institute) codes are used for Inspection, Recommendation, maintenance, Alteration and Repair in Running Plant .
BOTH ARE THE RULES AND REGULATION FOR DESIGN,CONSTRUCTION,INSPECTION & REPAIRS.
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), meanwhile, specifies standards for materials to be used in construction and infrastructure.PI Standards governs the design criteria and establishes sound practices of operation and maintenance techniques for static and rotary equipment
ASME: American society of mechanical engineering is used for acceptance and rejection criteria to check the quality.
API: American petroleum institute is the standard which gives the details about construction, inspection and repair of the construction
API documents are standards and recommended practices, In US they are basically considered to be good engineering Practice.
ASME is a construction codes which cover design, new construction issues and fabrication.
