- Public relations exists to produce goodwill in the company's various publics so that the publics do not interfere in the firm's profit-making ability.

Marketing is all about promoting yourself and on the other hand PR is all about managing the flow of information between an org and its publicist. However, former can be misleading but latter can not be. Marketing is all about sales and promoting the same. But PR is person-to-person and conveys the subject quite clearly and most important transparently.

Public relations is what as a resultant you get against what you do but  it also depends on the nature of business, if you have a product for which there is untapped market than PR is less paramount but where you are creating a new category you need to educate market PR will definable play an important role.

Public relations refer to informing the stakeholders , the government, and the press about the policies of the company . About the financial health of the company. The audience of public relations may or may not be consumers and can even be (shareholders)owners of the company. But the audience of marketing activities are always consumers.
