Is the question asked from the perspective of the recruiter or candidate? What do you mean by 'online'? Is it skype or soemthing? What is an 'offline' interview? 2 people in differnet places with no internet connection? Maybe reconsider the question or language used, it's not clear enough to answer.

I would prefer off-line interview which is a face-to-face interview. Though it is expensive and time-consuming, there is depth understanding of a person in real life than online. For example, in an online interview there will be questions like 'How would you rate your Communication skills?' however, in an interview, there is no need of a question as it can be understood based on how they answer. Similarly, Time Management skills, Leadership skills, Risk taking ability, how they will react to a change as well as Confidence can be found in a Face to Face interview than an Online interview.

offline interview

it may sound like a costly solution, but i will use the Quality science term -based on my background- that " Poor quality is more costly"!

real interviews are more accurate and for high selection criteria,

for example, watching closely the body language during interviews can lead to impressions about stress toleration , so, the physical presence of the candidate gives a more accurate reading to the interviewer.

and definitely choosing the wrong candidate could much more costly than tickets ghtrind hotels for hiring the right persons, as experience proved!
