Transformers are either of dry filled or oil filled types. Oil filled transformers are used by the electrical utility, and for industrial or large commercial applications whereas dry filled transformers are used in applications of farm utility.

Transformers are basically of two types insulating transformers  or auto transformer. Common two winding transformers are called insulating transformers. An auto transformer has its windings interconnected.

Control transformers are designed to withstand short duration overload with minimum voltage drop. They are mainly used in motor starters.

Constant output voltage transformers or voltage regulating transformers are those type which produce a constant output voltage in spite of a varying input voltage.
