The look up function in the MS Excel is a built in function in excel which can be used as a work sheet function in excel.
The Excel Lookup function has two forms
(1) The vector form of the Lookup function 'looks up' a value in a data vector and returns the corresponding value from a second data vector.
(2)The array form of the Lookup function 'looks up' a supplied value in the first column or row of a supplied data array and returns the corresponding value from the last column or row of the array.
Looks Up a Value either from a row or column range or from an array
LOOKUP function works in two ways: Vertical and Horizontal. This means you can use VLOOKUP (vertical lookup) when finding correspponding values in columns or HLOOKUP (horizontal lookup) when finding values of the reference cell in its row.
Use LOOKUP, one of the lookup and reference functions, when you need to look in a single row or column and find a value from the same position in a second row or column.
For example, let's say you know the part number for an auto part, but you don't know the price. You can use the LOOKUP function to return the price in cell H2 when you enter the auto part number in cell H1

vlookup function in excel for search
Vlookup (short for 'vertical' lookup) is a built-in Excel function that is designed to work with data that is organised into columns. For a specified value, the function finds (or 'looks up') the value in one column of data, and returns the corresponding value from another column.
