The first thing i would do is to get an update of what happened in the previous shift. Having done that,I would then take a tour of the facilities to get a first hand view of sitiuation / events at the work place.

Always observe the Attitude & Behaviour of the People / Employees working or Present at site,  Which will help you to assist the Overall Conditon of a Working Site. ( this observation will help to make a guide line for the whole day & the HSE Officer will quickly indulge all the Ideas, Strategies & Rules in his Mind, As how he will continue for the whole day at site).

( This is my own view)

What I would like my Safety Officers to do is to get a quick update on what happened in the previous shift. This way there is continuity in the supervision provided at the production areas

  • I attend supervisors and equipment meeting to discuss any previous safety issues such as incidents, whats the safety plan, check feedback from the supervisors and whats are recommendations on safety
  • Do follow up by fieding on what we discussed from the meeting in undergrond and surface

Yes Indeed, he is being the custodian of safety & security should have an  immediate bird's eye view of the colleagues and the work place as to know what is the safety culture prevailing at present before he could meet the senior safety management for immediate organizational safety induction briefing. Mind you that safety & security starts from the day first without making any observation to some one initially. Polite but firm can play a major role, while interacting with staff.
