To make it simple

SAP offers three different flavors to choose from

 1)      ECC or R3 ( For Large Enterprises)

2)      AIO or All in One ( For Medium Enterprises)

3)      SAB Business One ( For Medium and Large Enterprises)

Each version has got its own advantages and disadvantage and all comes with pre-configured basic settings according to your regional wise country specific standards.

Addiotnaly you can integerate with Any SAP falours from top to bottom

example: If your head office or large enterprise uses R3 and your business partner ( distributor) uses B1 two systems can be integerated seamlessly.

Investment presecpective its B1 cheaper compare to other two SAP offerings

Yes, it’s perfect for large companies with diversified setup, but as SAP the choice is available to select modules, according to requirement and available budget, so SMEs can use. It’s very good to have SAP, specifically for reporting purpose because SAP has multi-dimensional reports

I think it is possible to take advantage of SAP and dedicate it for a small business .but , you need to know which package you need to use ? and you have to be aware about the cost of IT installations . in italy% of its companies are small and medium and i rarely found the italian companies using SAP in those small (1 to employers ) and medium sizes ( to employers ) while it is always used with big companies and of course it is because of the cost and the lack of awareness about that while i still remember that i have read something about the effort of SAP to dedicate its innovative services and matching it with the small and medium sizes .
