First of all a potential learner chooses a language of his interest. If you dont like the language or whatever related to it, no progress will be possible. If the language is needed for work, the person has already a good reason to start. Of course, nothing comes out of nothing. It requires sitting down and be consequent at learning. As far as the method is concerned, all methods are good if you learn systematically. There is no solution that fits all. As far as I a,m concerned, I like the active approach, to observe and train my active listening, and then as I go along, pieces of the puzzle starts to fit. Of course, without the support of a teacher, any learning is not easy. But a student who does not make any effort will jeopardize all the good intentions of the Language Instructor. And then I suggest a daily nurturing of the acquired knowledge through TV , videos, films reading about everything etc It keeps the foreign language present in the mind.
