Corporate Social Responsibility will always be optional as it is a voluntary contribution of money and time as a form of giving back to society (voluntarily).  However, this type of social responsibility, if incorportated into the mission of the organization and followed throughout the corporation's indeavors and operations will result in many returns and higher success.

People tend to choose companies that provide enviromentally friendly products and services as a way of translating their own sense of personal responsibility to the environment and society in which they live.  Some of the most succesful companies have used this method of 'giving back' in order to remain ahead:  Starbucks, The Body Shop, Tom's Shoes, etc..
