Body language is just a part of how we communicate.  It doesn't have advantages and disadvantages, it just is.

In interpersonal communication, the exchange is done with words but also with the body. Corporal behaviors are often considered a language whose code is interpreted directly. In most cases, the behavior's body are encoded continuously, and likely iconic. We must then consider the inference process based on a representation of the state of the person interacts. There is theoretical and methodological tools of psychology for analyzing and interpreting nonverbal behavior. There's also an interpretive perspective that considers the functions of body behavior in communication and the context in which they are produced.
