Employee's training is as an investment in the human resource in the organiztion. If the training was designed and based on the training needs assessment, then managers will expect much more than motivation. Training is the merit of the job advancement.

Managers expect everything to be fixed by a training program. They expect it to be a magic that will change an employee’s personality and behavior overnight. The lack of clarity on what they need, let alone, what their team member needs is evident.

Sometimes managers would rather send the person for a training program when the issue has to be addressed through coaching.

Giving the misconception that managers have about what training, especially what soft skills training can and cannot do, it is important that the HR team guides the manager.

Some pertinent questions to ask-

-       Why is there a need for the program?

-       What is the current behavior and what is the expectation

-       How is the behavior or the lack of it affecting productivity?

-       Is this an area for coaching rather than training?

-       Is the employee on board with regard to this training need?

Once you get this understanding it is important to state whether the need can be addressed by the training program or not. Only when an employee is on board with regard to the need for a training program should he be sent. An employee who is resistant to learning, will not change, no matter how interesting or engaging the program is.

While training definitely reflects an organization wanting to invest in the employee’s career, HR must ensure that training programs are used when it is absolutely necessary and setting expectations is the most important step.
