Comic relief was used in Shakespeare's plays to allow for a release of emotions and ease tensions in the midst of an otherwise serious scene. Typically, a sidekick is used to comment on the absurdity of the protagonist's situation. The mockery of the fool in King Lear is an example of comic relief.
