The PC that we use for SCADA software is not a general purpose computer and our SCADA software is a full package for a control system (no need of updation required for this software).
The PC used in SCADA must have a proper operating system and operating system needs updates for its general features.
I think its not a bad idea to connect SCADA PCs to an internet for updation of only operating system features.
if you have strong fire wall you can do this job quickly and disconnect it from intrnet.
not recommended for security issues
I think you should highly avoid this as your system is might not designed to be plug on the internet. you need to have the risk assessment for your network and their risk factor.
here one of the accident in 2003 reported in ISA 62443-2-1 for (Security for Industrial Automation
and Control Systems Part2)
In 2003, a Worm spreed across internet and privet network crated damage to loos HMI and Historian data for petrochemical industry.
I think your Scada can have alternative as download the update or patch file to computer with internet then transfer it to your scada by CD after checking it with antivirus or you can transfer it by usb after formatting it to make sure no any unwanted files will be transferred.
I suggest you to check the series of documents starting with 99 (ANSI/ISA–99.0x.0x) speak about the security of the automation and control
no, because there is risk of security issues like virus
Not good, because it may be attacked by virus from unreliable website
Do NoT ,,,,, but if necessary .... you can update by USB stick (USB flash memory) by download the needed updates from your SCADA Company's site ( using another computer ,,, Not your SCADA computer) to your USB drive ,, and after scan it and be sure that it is clean and not containing any threads or malware (using strong antivirus), then , you can transfer this updates to SCADA computer by USB driver
