yes indeed you should, Virtualization is the new and general trend for everything "Systems & Networking" and it will reduce the cost by reducing the number of server and reducing the foot print for the Data Center, and it will increase the flexibility and scalability for your Infrastructure.

Consolidating server hardware via

virtualization offers ways to increaseutilization of existing hardware

from5-15%  up to80%

 It can also serve to:

• Reduce hardware requirements by a10-to-1 ratio

  or better

• Accelerate server provisioning time by50-70%

• Reduce energy costs by80%

• Power down servers without affecting applications

   or users

• "Green"the data center while decreasing costs and

  improving service levels

Generic answer would be NO.

Only if your data is not security senseitive and you have permession to store the data outside the country of operations (check countries rules and regulations of your industry) this might be an opion.

always segregate the data that is necessary for your operations and the one that you use as backup or dont use frequently.

the second can be virtualized the first shouldent, at leats not at this stage.

Assalam-o-Alaikum, before adopting any technology, we should be very clear about your requirements.   If your setup is big enough, you have planned which services to be virtualized, have prepared yourself to convince the management on virtualization, go for it.  It's best option to reduce cost.

i am sorry guysi know loads of guys may not be happy with what i am about to saywe are all here and to get the edge over the others we start writing things that we likevitalization is not a piece of candy for every one to have it requires consultation in which the whole environment is considered and in so many cases costs go higher than going down .no doubt it is a future technology but in this race of higher business numbers even the consultant don't guide clients very well. and they never get caught by innocent clients ever.so if you wanna really wanna know about the pros and cons of this do let me know i would assess and let you know how you would actual save loads loads of money

Virtualization project or as called "P2V - Physical to Virtualization" is very useful indeed even in small organization to achieve efficiency and stability as long as its implemted with right solution for your business requirement...

In small or medium organizaion (or even large) you will find mutile services their provider recommedning certain systems requirement between (OS, sw components, tools certain version, etc..) virtualization can help you prepare these environemnt without affecting the other ruuning application..

but always remmeber (REDUNDANCY) by removing any single point of failure because if you have implemted on Single Server or storage, you are open to SPF risk... for properly redundant solution utilization of RAM, CPU and HDD should never exceed50% since you might require it if the some node fail you need other to take all the load.. so reaching utilization of80% is never a good idea (in situation of2 physical node provided)...

Among the feature offered, +Efficiency, +Isolation, Cost-Reduction, Utilization, Recoverability... but most importantly you will be able to charge operational department for their use in system.. for example HR package using25% of RAM, CPU and HDD you be charging to their department25% of the cost of the server and how many seats they are using (i am assuming that you are using ITIL best practices...

sorry for the long answer but the thing is virtualization is very nice technology with many constraint and advatages associated.. it all dependsabout your business required to design the appropriate solution for you.

It all depends what do you have currently. If you do nto have much IT workload that forces you to pay serious money, it is not necessary. However it has got its on advantages though m like on the fly provisioning, serious fault tolerance etc and increase cost saving through  power saign etc.. Also the manageability as well.  The initial cost will be a little high as you will have to deploy high end hardware to host virtualisation.

You will definitely  ill cut on Hardware cost, operating system licensing and other software. But you need to consider the followings:

1- Do you have the required IT skilled resources to run the virtual environment.

2- Do you have high end servers that can handle the load of having several virtual servers in one box.

3- Which virtualization to use, is it hardware dependent or not.

So, if you get these areas covered I would say go Virtual.

best of luck
