Is it against journalism ethics to reveal an information that a source has given you "off the record"?

This is a compex area in the journalist and source relationship. If people trust us enough to provide information in confidence it needs to be respected - this is a traditional convention of journalism. Sources are paramount to the work of journalists. If the public lose trust with journalists it would be impossible to get stories out there.

However before committing to such an undertaking the journalist must be open and honest with the source. They need to assess and weigh the information before making a decision to disclose or withold. This will largely be determined by the nature and context of the information. For instance whether it is in the public interest or a matter of national security. This list does not stop there. They may well be other factors influencing their decision but ultimately it is up to the journalists to make that judgement.

Yes. It is against journalistic ethics that is why its called off the record. You are not suppose to reveal such information when it is specifically told 'off the record'

No I don't think its is legal to reveal such information unless it can benefit the community or a victim of unjustice
