The voiced and voiceless sounds can simply be distinguished by their property of making or not making vibration in the vocal-folds.Sounds, which make vibrations are called "voiced" while the others are called "voiceless". In general, when we take a pair of sounds like /s/, /z/ and /f/, /v/, the first sound of the pair will always be voiceless while the other will be voiced. Try producing "ssssssssssss" and "ffffffffffff". Not making vibrations, right? Now try producing "zzzzzzzzzz" and "vvvvvvvvvvvvvv". They'll definitely make vibrations.
