Create a situation where you can discuss with your manager how you would like him/her to communicate as the current method is not sustainable. Should the challenge be lost in translation then understand how you can work together to improve the lines of communication. If the line managers sense of communication differs to yours may not be wrong just different and establish how you can work together to gain and better understanding as an employee working with his.her boss. Stop think and understand the take action if not resolved then maybe the manager has not been trained and maybe he can learn from the employee.

This lack of communication is the principle trigger for work conflicts and lack to achieve satisfactory results in any organization.

In such circumstance, and since several times we can´t suggest for those managers go for some trainings, in my opinion the best we can do it is:

Face to face communication/coffeePot, oriented feedback for results. Internal workshops, discussion tables, small groups meetings, handwriting notes, virtual agendas where they can deliver tasks shared for all members (One Note from Microsoft allows it), reports, formal letters and memos.

The main thing that employees should be attentive in that communication is if has the follow "recipe":

- Comprehension - the strategic meaning of the needed information and actions that need to be executed

- Congruency - Information based on facts and evidences

- Transparency - veracity and confidence in the information given

- Ligemitimty - To do what is told to be done, and, preferably, relate it with real examples

If the employee doesn't "catch" these in the communication from their managers, the suggestion is try to change the roll how the communication is made.

The poor communications has to be  improved by training and Consultancy Services - If you don't know how to speak or write, there is no short cut method to solve this problem rather than hard work to solve by training.

To my understanding, this has to be dealt very carefully as follows:

1.       Observe communication discrepancies with your Manager for about a week or so.

2.       Listen first, react second. You can stand out and earn respect if you listen to what colleagues have said in the meeting. Use positive listening body language--open stance, upright posture, and acknowledgment

3.       Be prepared. While attending a meeting with your team in presence of Manager, write down a list of thoughts and questions to bring up.

4.       Now, approach your Manager about setting teamwork and communication goals. He will recognize your success and realize that you might have a point.

Successfully managing a difficult boss is a challenge but often feasible. First, you should try to understand the reasons for your boss’ difficult behavior. Assuming your boss generally behaves in a fairly reasonable manner, and that his/her difficult behavior seems to be a result of stress overload rather than his/her character, chances are good that the behavior can be modified. If your boss’ behavior seems to reflect a chronically hostile, abusive style of interacting regardless of the amount of stress in the worksite, the chances are less positive that the behavior can change. In fact, you may want to consider seeking counsel from a trusted mentor or human resources professional to evaluate your options.

Second, you have to manage your own negative emotions regarding his/her behavior so that you do not engage in self-defeating behavior (e.g., stonewalling or counter-attacking your boss).

Third, once you understand and manage your own negative reactions, you may work to communicate your issues/concerns — framed in a helpful, positive manner — creating an atmosphere for problem resolution.

Communication is the most important thing which is required whether it is working place or day to day life.

Without communication we will not be able to express what we require from the other person.

When we have a manager who's communication skills are poor it will be not easy to understand the tasks. But as a smart employee we have to understand from the situation what is the requirement of the hour.

We can understand from expression and gesture also what he wants. We have to check what is the problem, if manager is poor are verbal communication or written or someother. If he is fine with written communication than we can ask him to provide in written whatever he requires.

We have to tech our manager better communication skills. we can also suggest him some course or clubs which will help him improve communication skills

I concur with some of the above mentioned answers to which over and above that i would suggest;

  • passing off one's concerns as reversed suggestions to the manager and see how they respond.
  • if its to do with instructions then having correspondence such as e-mails would provide evidence for what has been suggested over and above the verbal communication structure.
  • Listening actively and responding without stepping on any toes would be great.
  • Create formidable allies that will help with the communication process in an understandable manner.
  • Seek advice from mentors and / or HR department if the communication process turns abusive.
