Yes, speaking to the applicant's present employer gives a high relevance to the hiring decision making of the top management. Prior to offering a job, it is a must to contact the applicants present employer and talk about his/her performance/qualification/attitude from his current company. Their present employer plays a big role whether they're qualified or not, because they know well how he/she is at work. However, it doesn't just rest on that but their actual performance during the interview and the job itself matters too. It might be possible that his employer might back him up for possible employment opportunity or vice versa.
